MetroCon Anime Convention

(Friday - Sunday, July 18-20)
Nerd alert. MetroCon is being held all weekend beginning Friday at the Tampa Convention Center. So if you see some strangely dressed people, they’re probably just anime enthusiasts heading to or from the show. I don’t know much about anime other than watching Speed Racer as a kid, but there’s some interesting stuff being done. It’s a bit more mainstream, but I love Miyazaki’s films.

Masks & Identity: Len Prince in the Collection of William K. Zewadski

Runs through August 2, 2008 at the Florida Museum of Photographic Arts. FMoPA has some nice shows and deserves a bigger audience. Here’s a description of the current exhibit from the site:

Len Prince arrived in New York in 1972 and built an impressive reputation for his photographs that have appeared in Vanity Fair, Interview and InStyle magazines as well as for his work for Estee Lauder and Cartier. He is especially recognized for his portraits of celebrities as seen in his 1997 book, About Glamour. Portrayed in the style of 1930s Hollywood publicity stills, Prince’s luminaries (Eartha Kitt, Drew Barrymore, Patrick Stewart and Kevin Spacey among others in the exhibition) wield the force of their fame through faces they have crafted and perfected.

Creative Loafing Beer Club

Thursday, May 29th, 2008

Creative Loafing has what they call a “Beer Club” which seems more like a marketing vehicle but may turn out to be something worth while. The first one that I went to was at Fly downtown. They had a few beers that seemed like leftovers from a recent beer show but they did include some winter ales from Rogue and other craft brewers. The next Creative Loafing Beer Club event is Friday, June 13.
