Is South Howard Really Restaurant Row?

A recent article on TBO.com sings the praises of Howard Avenue and proclaims the abundant choices of restaurants to be found in the area. Sure, there are probably more here than in the rest of the city but that’s not saying much about a location that is known for being the birthplace and incubator of chain establishments. Is there really quality?

The article prompted a surprised reader to comment:
While “SOHO” may have the quantity it is definitely lacking in the quality. I am not expecting celeb chefs and the craftsmanship of New York City, but we need to start demanding a bit more from our local restaurateurs in terms of quality.

Although I love Howard avenue and being able to walk to dinner or a beer, I have to say that I agree with the reader’s complaint. Bern’s is a mainstay and a nice place to take out-of-town friends or family. Ceviche’s is the happening place right now. And there’s always Bella’s when you just want something easy. But there’s not much else that I would recommend to a visitor.

Anyone who has been to Charleston or New Orleans, let alone New York City, would be disappointed with the selection here. But I don’t think that it’s entirely the restaurants’ fault. Too many people prefer the bland safety of a predictable chain restaurant meal. Price is a factor also. A lot oy younger people moving into the area are looking for the cheapest option. That’s understandable, but an urban community should be about options. And right now, that’s not really Howard Avenue.

Oh, and where did he smell the cafe con leche lingering in the air? I don’t think there’s anywhere left on Howard that makes it.

Coming back to this, I think I was a bit hard on the restaurants. It’s just because I’ve been to some other cities that have amazing places and I think Howard Avenue could be on par with those.

I’ve been to Manny’s and they got my order wrong and the service wasn’t too good. But i won’t give up on them. I’ll give them another try.
