Tampa City Council Denies Beer Garden

The Tampa City Council first approved a proposed beer and wine license for a beer garden in Hyde Park Village and then reversed its decision. Apparently some residents who moved into an “urban” community just realized that they are not the only residents around. How do you buy a condo above a store front and then whine about the potential noise and “food smell”? That’s what Tampa Palms is for. Where you have to drive 20 minutes to buy food and necessities.

A TBO.com story explains it:

“We are very concerned about the noise,” said Deborah Rhodes, who paid $530,000 last year for a 2,200-square-foot condominium above the pedestrian shopping complex where the International Beer Garten wanted to locate. “This is under our bedrooms.”

She also complained about noise and food odor from the nearby Wine Exchange.

The council gave preliminary approval April 17 for alcohol sales at the beer garden.

Since then, business owners Patty Corey and April Cox discovered “negative attitudes” about their proposal and had “come to realize we are not welcome,” according to a letter from the partners read by Councilman Charlie Miranda.

What is so wrong with mixed use? If you want to be secluded with no noise or contact with the outside world, why do you choose to live in the one place in the area that is semi-urban? And why does it seem that the City Council only approves projects with any amount of controversy if you have high priced lawyers and float a ton of cash around?
