Ikea Breaks Ground In Tampa

TBO.com reports that Ikea will break ground soon on their new Tampa location east of downtown:

“The company plans to begin building on 29 acres on Adamo Drive at 22nd Street, just east of downtown Tampa, on June 4.

Tampa Mayor Pam Iorio and other city officials are expected to attend a groundbreaking ceremony, Ikea says.”

I have mixed feelings about Ikea. They occupy a middle ground between bland, cheap furnishings and higher priced designer store offerings. They’re a middle ground in the trade off between price and style. But the savings comes at a price. You could argue that it’s more junk from China made by manufacturers that mistreat the workers and the environment. You could also question why Mayor Iorio is so excited to bring in a company offering mostly low paying jobs that will suck the money out of the area. Shouldn’t we be more interested in developing or relocating high paying technology companies to Tampa? It may sound cynical, but if you care about your community, these are issues that you have to consider.

On the other hand, Ikea does offer affordable products for middle class families and hopefully they pay better than Walmart. They have some cool stuff, too.
